33nd Annual Century Ride
and 7th Annual Double Century

Saturday, September 9, 2006

THE 33rd ANNUAL BBC CENTURY again runs from the pretty little college town of Montevallo in southern Shelby County, starting at the high school, adjacent to the University of Montevallo campus. The routes – same as in 2005 – mostly use very quiet rural roads, featuring fields & forest, pastures & orchards, country stores & churches - and not much else. There are routes for all cyclists, from casual to expert to the truly committed (or, as in the case of the Double, for those who perhaps should truly BE committed).

103 and Under: The routes run south into Chilton County with the 103 going on down into Autauga County. Looping back from the rest stops creates the shorter options. The Shelby County and northern Chilton County roads are very good, but expect a few miles of coarser pavement in the southern half of the 103; that’s the trade-off for the fun of riding in very low traffic rural areas. These roads are not flat. Our map software says total climb for the 103 is approx. 6500 ft., but don’t get your Spandex all in a wad about that – the computer adds up every little heave in the road. There are no scary-big hills but there are a lot of rollers and the 103 has a few 200 – 300 ft. climbs.

200-Specific Info: Please arrive by 3:30 AM to get ready, hear the inevitable (but inspiring) pre-ride brief, then roll out at 4:00 AM sharp!
Bring front and rear lights good for 2 hrs to do the first loop (37 mi.) in the dark. Since dawn is at 6:02 AM, just keep your blinkies on for the next loop (29 mi.). As each loop returns to the start you can get vittles and stash your lights, jacket, etc. A 17 mph average will get you back in time to go out with the Century crowd at 8:00 AM, so you’ll have plenty of riders to draft (or pull!) for your next 103 miles. After the Century do the 31-mile route to reach 200 miles total. If you can’t start that last loop by 4:00 PM, please skip it – all riders must be done by 6:00 PM. Total elevation gain for the Double exceeds 10,000 ft., but as noted above, no big climbs.
Note: All 200 milers must pre-register, either in advance by mail or web, or on Friday night 9/8 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the Cahaba Cycles shop in Pelham.
